Anyone who has been in the marketing business long enough knows it has many facets. From traditional print marketing (which is gradually fading away) to social media marketing and everything in between. But there is one type of marketing that is often overlooked:  values-driven marketing.

In a world where most businesses are driven exclusively by a thirst for profit, some individuals are compelled by more than just money, they are motivated by the idea of making the world a better place, be it for people, for the environment, for animals, or all of the above.

Such is the case of Sandra Nomoto, a Canadian author and founder of Sandra Nomoto Enterprises, with whom Stratik Group International had the pleasure of enjoying a brief conversation about herself, her profession, and the current marketing landscape in the age of AI.

Stratik Group International: Tell me a little about yourself and how you ended up creating Sandra Nomoto Enterprises.
Sandra Nomoto: I’m a Filipina Canadian daughter of immigrant parents, raised and based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 2019, a year and a half after closing the public relations agency I ran for over 10 years, I sat down to meditate. I had finally transitioned to a vegan lifestyle in 2018, which was a personal goal of mine for many years. My intuition said, “You’re a vegan now, and you’ll always be a writer. Put those things together.”

I know when I ignore my intuition it just comes back to me stronger, so I threw a service page up on my personal website at SandraNomoto.com and started working with vegan companies on their written content. Since I started in 2020, the business has taken several pivots; instead of content writing, I now offer executive assistant, publicity, and book-related services.

Stratik Group International: What kind of clients do you work with?

Sandra Nomoto: I work with leaders of cruelty-free/vegan companies as an executive assistant or publicist. I also work with authors as a book coach, ghostwriter, editor, formatter, and publicist.

Stratik Group International: That’s wonderful. Considering your background in these areas, how do you see AI technologies changing and even disrupting the present and future of book publishing, storytelling, and also how vegan and non-vegan companies do their marketing?

Sandra Nomoto: AI isn’t new to communications; many of us have been using writing tools like Grammarly and ProWritingAid to remove errors. You can ask AI to write you a story or help you restructure a story. There are lots of audio to text transcription apps, which are helpful for interviewing and ghostwriting for clients (I use Otter.ai).

People have used ChatGPT to write books, which I highly recommend against unless you are using it more as an editor or you’re comfortable sharing author credit with AI. We’re now seeing AI do narration for audiobooks, but Audible (Amazon) only allows it for certain publishers right now. I expect that to change within the next few years.

I’d be surprised to hear nonvegan companies that aren’t already using or at least considering AI tech in marketing. It’s already changed the way people develop messaging and other types of marketing campaigns.

Vegan companies can use AI tech the exact same way, but depending on their audience, they might use it for more education or advocacy in their messaging. For example, I’m seeing a lot more AI-generated images and videos that try to get people thinking about how animals are killed for food, so they can consider the point of view of animals and other options instead.

There was one AI app that was developed specifically for vegans, but it didn’t gain enough traction. NotCo in Chile is a great example of a vegan company using its own AI for R&D and potential food products.
