In 2017, Melanie Joy, Sebastian Joy, and Tobias Leenaert created ProVeg International, a non-governmental organization whose goal it is to reduce the consumption of animal products by at least 50% and replace them with plant-based and cultured alternatives by 2040.
Why is such a shift so important? For one, animal agriculture is among the main drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, and the main reason tropical rainforest deforestation is occurring at such a rapid pace, not to mention the industrialized animal cruelty involved on a global scale.
In 2018, the founders of ProVeg International created ProVeg Incubator, the business incubator arm of the organization, designed to support vegan startups. The very first incubator of its kind, ProVeg Incubator has helped companies like Better Nature and Formo become established enterprises that provide animal-free foods.
What’s more, ProVeg actively promotes food innovation by actively seeking the next plant-based, cultivated or fermented food entrepreneur by way of their program Kickstarting for Good, which specifically looks for those with a powerful idea to transform the food system, or those with an existing idea with the potential to scale for a significantly greater impact.
The Kickstarting for Good incubator is a 15-week program that includes two in-person weeks in Berlin, Germany (travel and accommodations courtesy of the program).
